Thanks for taking some time to learn a little bit more about Georgia Tech. My name is Rick Clark and I am the director of undergraduate admission here. First and foremost, I just want to say.
Congratulations, we are so excited to offer you admission and really looking forward to being able to tell you a little bit more about what makes this place so special. One of the things we speak with, our tour guides a lot about in our staff in general is that we don't sell Georgia Tech. We tell Georgia Tech and that's really the goal for this presentation is just to give you the information that you need to make a good college choice and our staff is available to answer your questions.
We hope that you'll be able to connect with one another online as well, and to do your research and make a great choice for your college career. But we really want to first and foremost, on behalf of the entire institution. All of our students and faculty and alumni just say Welcome to the Georgia Tech family. We're glad that you are continuing to consider. Georgia Tech is one of your college options. To start I just want to talk a little bit about Georgia Tech's history. How we started, who we are. What makes us maybe a little bit different.
Uh, then other schools, and to do that and to really understand that you kind of have to go all the way back to the beginning. Georgia Tech started in 1885 and the entire concept of for the Genesis of Georgia Tech was it was a time of great change. We look back on that and think those. Maybe we're slow times, but the truth is that around that period of the Industrial Revolution things were changing very fast in our country. In our state here in Atlanta as well.
A lot of shifting that was occuring a lot of question about where the world was going and if there's ever been a time where we can kind of relate to maybe the mentality of 1885 it's now the idea that we don't have all the answers the idea that there are a lot of challenges both on a state regional national and even global scale and that has always been what's brought people to Georgia Tech and if you are watching this presentation and thinking a little bit about Georgia Tech.
Would I would have you do is consider is that who You Are. Are you somebody who is excited about solving problems? Are you someone who wants to work together with others in order to leverage your strengths and imagine a better future? This is a place that brings students for that purpose that brings faculty for that purpose and then launches alumni out into the world in order to continue doing that in their local community and on a global scale as well.
A little bit about our applicant pool this year and also the other students like you who have been admitted first and foremost. We had a record number of applications this year. We were up about 11% from last year in terms of those students applying, which also meant that are admit rate this year is lower than it has been in the past. You can see how that differs from Georgia to Non Georgia, but the biggest thing that I hope you would take away from this slide is not anyone number.
But the general concept that you should be incredibly proud of being admitted this year, and we hope that you will ultimately choose Georgia Tech. But even if you don't, I hope you'll take some time to enjoy and reflect on the hard work that it's taken for you to get to this point where you have choices. You have options in Georgia Tech is certainly one of those. The other thing I want to point out on the slide is the diversity of the class we are proud to bring students from all of our state.
All over the country and really all over the world to campus. And if you choose to come here, what you're going to find is that there are classmates, people that are going to be on your IM teams, people that will be in clubs and organizations with you who are from places that you couldn't .2 on a map and we believe that our strength, one of our greatest strengths is the diversity of students that we bring here. People who have different ideas, different thoughts, different passions, different interests and that is certainly something that Georgia Tech prides itself on.
I heard in a long recently say that if you choose to come to Georgia Tech, then changing the world won't be a dream anymore because will give you the skills to actually do it. And that is really our goal and I think that is what bonds a lot of the students, faculty and others who are part of this community is that they want to see things move forward. They want to see things improved, and they're coming here in order to develop. In order to do that.
Which really speaks directly to our model of progress and service. It's something that we really embrace. It's this idea that progress being the idea of moving forward of having a vision of wanting to see things get to a better point and then service. Being this idea of looking around from your left to your right, imagining how can I bring people with me and who do I need? Not just looking with blinds or straight ahead and driving towards a goal.
But who can I bring with me? And who can I lean on in order to leverage my weaknesses? Bring together strains complementary skills and make a better path forward? Joy Bella weenie is a great example of this CS student. Here in Georgia, taxes moved on to MIT grad level. I would encourage you to check out her YouTube information. She's also done some Ted talks, and she really does a great job talking through some of the.
Algorithms within facial recognition that have had racial bias as part of them, and she has done a tremendous job of making people ask deeper questions and improving so much of what happens in the algorithms around facial recognition in a variety of different arenas. Another good example is Laurel Margaret Burbach, who I had the pleasure of knowing when she was here and working closely with when she was on SJ at Georgia Tech.
I'm her passion, surrounded equity and access in education and teacher training and trying to see that we bring more equity and concepts of educational practices across all communities around the country. Lower Margaret was in DC working on this type of national policies. She came back to Georgia to focus on that here and then she's now moved on to the University of Chicago to do her.
One of the coolest things that George attack and something I would encourage you to check out online is called the Inventure Prize, and I think this really embodies the concept of progress in service that Georgia Tech. Basically this is like Shark Tank for students and we every year hosting March a competition that brings students together with their various ideas and ultimately they end up on a stage. Six different teams. If you are competing for Google sponsored money.
To launch their idea into the marketplace, it starts all the way back in the fall and if you come to Georgia Tech very soon after you arrive on campus, you'll start hearing about various submissions where students come together in teams and they propose ideas to faculty who come alongside them and work with them to refine their idea.
Ultimately, at the inventor prize and again, all of this is online. The years of various network productions and all of the details that surround it. But the concept is that again our students are looking for ways to improve various niches of society, and you've seen everything from ethers medical, which is featured here on the slide. Having to do with more accurate spinal injections to other Biomedical Engineering Productions.
An concepts, two things that surround archery in the accuracy of both. So you'll see a wide variety and I think it's indicative again of the various passions and interests that our students have.
To talk a little bit about academics, one of the first things that I hope you will get out of this slide is Georgia Tech is not all things to all people. We offer 35 different majors in six different colleges so we don't do it all. We are not the flagship in our state. We do not have. Every major were very lean in many ways, but the upside if you come here is that Georgia Tech overtime has just said what does the world need and can we do that better than?
Anyone else, and if the answer to both those questions is yes, we have those majors. One of the majors were bringing back is building construction as an example. It's something that the world needs. It's something that we believe we can do extremely well. If you look at the city of Atlanta and how Georgia Tech has really been instrumental in seeing growth here and really graduates of Georgia tag going all over the country and all over the world to build infrastructure and cities, this is.
Very true, uhm so. 35 various majors. The idea that we are not all things to all people is very indicative in that in that also we would be categorized as a mid sized public University, a little over 16,000 undergraduates. Again, our first year classes, about 32150 or so, but one of the great stats on this flag and something I hope you will pay a lot of attention.
Since you consider as you're making a college choice, is our retention rate at 97%. You know really what I think that speaks to is the idea that Georgia Tech students are happy here that they're feeling supported here that they're being academically successful, and that there also financially capable of continuing. There are right now about 25 schools in the country at a 97% retention rate or higher, and six of those are public, so we're extremely proud too.
Uhm, have that statistic. It is a question I hope you'll ask as you are going out to various colleges. The national retention rate from first to second year is about 67% and so it's an important one to consider in to ask. The last thing I'll say about this slide is that 85% as you can see of our classes, have fewer than 50 students, and so while the most common class size at Georgia Tech is between 26 and 33, most of the classes you're going to take here are.
Not probably 2 dis similar in size to what you've experienced in high school, and so that is something that students really enjoy. They have access to world class faculty. They have the ability to connect with other students throughout their career in Georgia Tech.
In terms of outside the classroom opportunities, something that is at the very heart of who we are is an institution. Is this desire to connect students to the marketplace? And so the Coop and internship opportunities at Georgia Tech or extremely robust. Again, as you come here, you'll find that right off the bat you're going to be hearing from Advisors and hearing from various people around campus about the opportunity to refine your resume.
Interviewing skills, interviewing strategy tips and techniques and then also employers coming to campus to interview students throughout the year for positions that may be in Atlanta, they may be somewhere else throughout the country or even abroad now to Co op ING would be a situation where you would work for a company for a semester, come back to class and alternate three or four different times, and then within turning. Of course, that's just a one semester commitment and.
Many students will do multiple internships during their Georgia Tech career. We believe this is something that doesn't make us absolutely unique, but certainly distinguishes us from a lot of other institutions and what you'll also find is that Georgia Tech students your Co op Ingen interning will often have more job offers at a higher starting salary than students who don't have that type of marketplace experience. And then the last thing and something I hope you'll do no matter if you pick Georgia Tech.
Or not is take the time to study abroad. We believe that one of the reasons students thrive at Georgia Tech and well beyond their experience here is because they have had the opportunity to connect to the global market place to enhance their language skills, to see a world much bigger than what they were. Regardless of where they're from had ever been exposed to before. One thing I hope you'll also consider when you're selecting a college is that it's really not just about the.
For years you spend on campus, but about the 40 years beyond that that you might be working and one promise that we have to student says we're going to build a network for you. A network of other classmates that are here on campus. But also in that work well beyond an through Co. Oping and studying abroad were insuring were doing that with people who are already in industry and that are in countries outside the United States as well.
One of the greatest strength we have is our city and as an Atlanta native, I will of course recognize and admit I'm slightly biased, but I would say there has never been a better time to live here then. Now if you look around, certainly Midtown, where Georgia Tech is based.
The cranes the development the investment in our area is unbelievable and many various companies are moving their innovation centres right here to midtown in order to take advantage of the student talent and the professors and faculty members that we have huge investments major companies across the Fortune 500 that are putting their innovation centers and hubs right here in Atlanta and also from where we sit.
In midtown, the ease of accessing the city weather be walking over to Mercedes-Benz stadium to catch a Atlanta united are Falcons game. Whether it be another professional sporting event that are all very close to us or theater music dining, so many great options that are right here in the general vicinity, I hope that you'll have the opportunity to visit soon and see for yourself what the city of Atlanta continues to.
Again, as you're thinking through your final college decision, obviously a huge part of this should be the idea of return on investment, and if you look at these numbers, they're impressive and and there's no question about that. I think though that something we can't capture in statistics is this idea of choice, and if you think about why you go to college and why you pick any one college, ultimately we all want choice. We want options and Georgia Tech will ensure that that's exactly what you're going to have.
You're going to have choice of internships. In co-ops, you're going to have choice of study abroad opportunities. As we've discussed, you're going to have a choice of doing research, and when you're done, you're going to have multiple job offers. This is something that I hope you'll take into consideration, as students are leaving. They are finding jobs, but they're not just finding a job. They're not just finding one job there actually. Like you, probably sitting there now with multiple college offers.
Able to look through and say here's the pay. Here's the location. Here's the climate of that particular office or that particular company now. Which one do I want to work for? And as you talk to or research a little more alumni at Georgia Tech, current students, those are great questions to be asking is what have been some of your choices and some of your options, but without a doubt. This is something we will promise you if you come here and invest in your time.
If you come here and invest in those around you, if you come here and invest in furthering your education and furthering your network, you're going to come out of Georgia Tech with a great job and the job you actually want.
In terms of paying for college, this is obviously such a huge conversation in a big question that is on your mind right now. As you sit down with your financial aid offers from Georgia Tech and other places, I hope that you'll be weighing not just what we talked through on the return on investment side, but also how you can go through an offset costs, so it's not always just about the actual bottom line number that you're paying, but also how is it that you can set those?
Aside and pay for your figure overall education. These are the numbers from in state, Nana state, but I want to point out the creative ways to pay, particularly as it relates to part time jobs through research and Co. Op. Offsetting this through some of the salaries students are earning, especially if you look at Co op where students were working multiple semesters. It's an excellent way to reduce debt and come out of college with limited loans.
So as you head into making your final choice, if you choose to deposit at Georgia Tech, you will pay our overall admission deposit at $250 and then at that point ensure that all of your financial aid documents are in will also be asking for a $600 housing deposit and that will vary slightly. If you are intending to enroll in the summer.
And you'll start moving down the road of actually submitting a housing application, making sure that the major that you listed on your application is still the major that you intend to begin at Georgia Tech. And just to pause on that briefly, I'll say that if you applied to Georgia Tech and have now been admitted, we believe you're capable of succeeding in any of our majors. And if you would like to change out of the major that you listed on your application.
You have the opportunity to do that before you ever set foot on campus. If you an once you confirm your major, you come to facet orientation through the summer and you begin at Georgia Tech, but you still have the opportunity after a certain point in the fall to switch your major again and one of the things I think that distinguishes Georgia Tech is that that's the policy that we have. We want you to find the particular academic major you're most interested in that you're passionate about and then.
You believe is the best trajectory for your future, and so we are not putting limitations in place on that. As you move through this process.
So Lastly, I just want to again circle back to where I started and thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit more. I hope that you will continue to use social media in order to research.
College options on our admission sites through Instagram, Twitter Facebook and then as you can see, a couple of these hashtags. It's our goal to provide a real sense of face in place of Georgia tax so that you can see our faculty. See our students in here from them through the course of the weeks leading up to May 1 will also be communicating regularly to ensure you have the tools that you need to make the best choice, but I just want to close by saying I hope you will also use social media to.
Look into the clubs and organizations you might want to pursue, whether that be here or elsewhere, because those students don't know you're looking. Those students are just going through their day today and putting out content, and that's one of the best sort of organic, natural, true ways to understand the culture and the community. And So what? I would just close with is this. We want you to pick George attack. If you believe that Georgia Tech is the best fit for you. If you do your homework and you look closely and you look at all your other options and decide that there's a better place.
We just want to wish you all the best as you move forward, but if there's anything we can do by answering your questions, we hope that you will email us. We hope that you will interact with us on social media and we want more than anything to again just congratulate you and welcome you to the Georgia Tech family go jacket.
